DESIGN AND ENVIRONMENT. Forms and structures

article

"It is absurd to claim that" design save the world "as some have said in a moment of exaltation. What is certain is that a proper design of the things that make up our environment, is essential to improving our quality of life. In fact this would be the essence of creativity well understood, in all its aspects. It is to the extent that we are more 'useful' things we use that increases the quality of our relationship with them. This improvement is achieved by correcting the deficiencies in the existing objects and adding, however slight, improvement. Sometimes just a way to achieve change. However, the quality of life no longer depends solely on how you configure things around us. The major problems beyond the creative capacity of the individual are no longer even own a country or continent. There are global factors that affect us all and can only be solved with the active participation of all. Both nationally and internationally, both professionally and individually.

seems that, finally, society has become more conscious the problems caused by climate change. It notes the melting of polar icecaps, the ozone hole growth and pollution, but apparently, one of the most urgent problems facing the world, is the scarcity of water: an essential ingredient life on earth. And this is not about the problems of cyclical drought affecting certain regions, but there is enough water to meet growing demand. Our planet now has the same amount of water thousands of years ago when, on the other hand, consumption continues to grow.

way of life "Western" (which is usually the model we all aspire) not only induces increased consumption, but that wastes water. Not valued as the essential and irreplaceable it is. Progress has brought in their baggage, in addition to these healthy principles of hygiene, which already generates more consumption, also a predisposition to waste. Both personal and industrial, water is wasted regardless of the enormous value.

The problem of scarcity is an urgent and serious. Maybe we can even alleviate it if we take, immediate steps. Measures that are not only urgent, but should focus in multiple directions. It is clear that the most pressing issue is to define a global policy for the protection of reserves existing surface and groundwater. A policy based on preventing water pollution by those agents that degrade and, in turn, recycling waste water. But, even if it were enforced successfully, it still exists in the fact that water naturally available land will be insufficient to meet the growing needs of the planet. Thus a future global policy must also include an action to curb the indiscriminate use is being done.

Our affluent society lacks the "cult of water" that is seen in other cultures. It is a cultural problem that has to be modified. Nobody ever taught us to "respect" the water just as we have been taught to respect a flower or a book. And that's where the problem starts. It is this lack of awareness of the essential value of water, which affects our everyday behavior. When we leave a tap running longer than necessary are not aware that this gesture is "bleeding" the limited supply of something so vital.

now is talk of future water shortages in certain areas. I do not think this is the solution, but is the only one that can be taken immediately. Indeed, it is clear that cutting hours, there is no consumption, however, in those times that you supply will be consumed with the same waste and also collecting water will fill bathtubs and containers, much of which is not then used. You can end up being a little savings at the expense of creating nuisance for thousands of users. Is a solution "patch".

What we really do is to moderate water consumption without reducing rational use. This would be the best solution. The goal is to get all the water consumed is actually "used". To avoid that much water going to drain directly from the tap without any use.

This lack of respect for the water is so anchored in our culture, which is observed even in the mills that modern man has created for use. The mechanical concept of current-tap is the commonly used device that we have today is very primary-if you look through the prism green. A device with a simple twist allows continuous output of water is no longer appropriate for the situation. It requires a total rethinking! Until there is a judicious use of water and I fear that this will soon occur in the meantime, we must use our ingenuity to create a new generation of devices capable of controlling the waste without affecting the application.

This is the proper role of design and creativity in general: to identify knowledge gaps and find ways to improve things to adapt to new demands of the present. Improving quality of life made possible by new technologies should not be limited to advance regardless of the problems involved. It offset the side effects they generate. Otherwise there is no progress!. We need to develop new devices to counter the deficiencies caused by growth. In this case the research must focus on creating a new concept of more sophisticated taps that give us the water we need both to avoid all that wasted water. Today there

faucets that are activated automatically with a photocell when the hands are placed under the spout and others with pedal pressure. Devices are expensive and are often used for public facilities and communities. What is needed now is to develop simple solutions that are affordable for most price and ease of installation. The new device has to be a simple product and serial, to be as common in facilities such as taps are now. Small point solutions that are affordable for the majority contribute much to solve big problems.

is a challenge that affects not only the design, but in which the design has an important role to play. It is this type of issues, those who exercise research design, could find material. Forget a while the furniture machinations to which many had turned and see how we can help with our creative imagination to solve problems as vital and interesting not least creatively. So that design can, if not save the world, at least help alleviate many of the problems that plague. "
